The Year 1993 always holds a special meaning for the RSGC as it was our momentous milestone of 100 years of establishment.

To commemorate this auspicious occasion, a line-up of events and activities were held throughout the year with a grand Centenary Ball on 21 October 1993 to mark exactly the 100 years  to the day when the laying out of the golf course was completed and formally opened for play at the RSGC’s old site at Petaling Hill.  The celebration culminated to a Grand Year-End Celebration on 31 December 1993.

As part of the celebrations, the Centenary  Billiards & Snookers Inter-Club competition  was held in January,  the Centenary Quadrangular Match were played with Royal Bangkok Sports Club, Hong Kong Golf Club and Singapore Island Country Club in May, the Centenary Inter-Club Lawn Tennis/Squash/Billiards Competition in July, the Swimming Carnival in August and lastly the Centenary Team Tennis Tournament in December.

The centenary year  was also very eventful for the RSGC on the international front.  The Royal & Ancient (R&A) held its first Referees’ School outside of St. Andrews at the RSGC in January 1993. February saw RSGC playing host to the Benson & Hedges Malaysian Open. The June events were the 21st Ladies RSGC Amateur Open Championship and a Friendly Golf Competition with all the Affiliated and Royal Clubs.  The Nomura Cup (Asia Pacific Amateur Golf Team Championship) was staged in August and the Benson & Hedges Golden Challenge in October.

There was also an exhibition of the Club’s historical golfing memorabilia and the launching of commemorative stamps and first-day covers in honour of the Centenary Year. Limited edition Centenary souvenir items were also specially designed for sale to the Members and guests as collectors’ items and as a token of remembrance of  the Club’s grand achievement of 100 years.

As a finale to the Centenary Year, a time capsule was sealed and buried on 29 April 1994 at a spot nearby to the tee-box of the 1st Hole, Old Course.  The capsule is to be opened by the future generation of the membership during the RSGC’s 200th anniversary exactly on 21 October 2093.
